From Fridge to Frame: My Experience with the Fanta Camera

Since I started taking pictures with film, I’ve been searching for the weirdest camera possible. Hours of browsing eBay and online camera stores finally paid off when I stumbled upon the Fanta Camera. Jackpot!

The Fanta camera is a 35mm film camera cleverly disguised as a Fanta can. It’s a blast from the past, likely a marketing campaign from the 1990s when cheap film cameras were all the rage.

You might have seen the Budweiser camera if you’re into film cameras. Both look like beverage cans, but this camera lacks a flash, making it less ideal for parties but perfect for sunny days.

Fanta-stic Photos: A Quirky Camera Review

I bought my Fanta can film camera in the summer of 2023 for €30 on eBay. But only recently finished my first roll of film in it. The black-and-white pictures you see here are from that roll that I finally made it through in July 2024.

Also, the pictures might look off here since this was one of the first rolls I self-developed at home, and I’m still learning how to do that properly. Sorry for the scratches and water stains that you can see in some pictures here.

While it was just a test roll, I love this camera. Its bright orange color and round shape make me smile whenever I take it out of my backpack.

This camera is lightweight, easy to use, and perfect for BBQs, outdoor activities, or any casual setting where picture quality isn’t the main focus. It’s also a guaranteed conversation starter; people’s reactions when you pull it out in public are priceless!

There are a couple of drawbacks. The viewfinder is slightly misaligned with the lens, so framing can be tricky. Also, the lens is similar to those in disposable cameras, so don’t expect sharp images like the ones I get with my Canon F-1.

Overall, my experience with the Fanta camera has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s a fun, unique camera perfect for capturing memories with friends. I can’t wait to see how it handles color film!

How to use the Fanta Camera

The Fanta camera is surprisingly easy to use and designed for kids. To load a film, press a button on the bottom, pry open the back, load the film, and insert the leader into the spool on the left. Rewinding is done by cranking the rim, which makes a satisfying sound that’s become one of my favorite things about this camera.
