There are a lot of late night hosts on American TV but our favorite has been Conan O’Brien for quite a long time. With this in mind, you can imagine how excited we were when we realized that there would be a Conan in Berlin tour. Too bad we never manage to be in the right place at the right time but we can be happy to watch now everything that Conan did in Berlin back in September 2016.
For those who don’t know, Conan O’Brien has been taking his crew around the world for quite a while. On the last couple of years, he went to South Korea, Armenia, and Cuba, where he was the first late night host there since the start of the U.S. embargo that started in 1962. We watched each and every one of these shows and this is why we were really excited to see Conan in Berlin.
Our Personal Highlights from Conan in Berlin
In early December, Conan in Berlin reached American airwaves and youtube and we selected some of the coolest things that he did in Berlin.
Everything starts with a really weird look into one of the most tourist spots Berlin has: the Flea Market at Mauerpark. This is one of the places where you can find pretty much anything. For some people like we, this place is filled with overpriced garbage, but a lot of people seem to disagree with us and flock there every Sunday to enjoy the weather outdoor and buy some vintage furniture.
It seems that the Flea Market at Mauerpark was the first place Conan visited in Berlin and you can see that he really found himself since there are a lot of opportunities for him to show the huge clown that he is. After watching the video once again, we are left wondering how did he manage to find a deer foot in there and why did we never see one before?
Another highlight of Conan in Berlin is the german class that he has during lunch with his travel partner Flula Borg. They went to a really touristic brewery close to Alexanderplatz and, when we first heard about this, it felt like this would be a really crappy segment. But we were wrong, we were really wrong.
Conan finds a group of Asian tourists and drinks with them and ends up bringing something hilarious to a bizarre situation and what follows is even better.
Since Conan and his crew are in a traditional Bavarian brewery, they have to learn how to dance the Schuhplattler, a traditional Bavarian folk dance that includes a lot of butt clapping. Even Andy Richter, his co-host, shows up to dance and, of course, everything becomes a joke.
Mostly because the two twin dancers there have to teach them something that it doesn’t look simple at all. And their father is the musician playing and he is as german as it can be. You need to see it to understand.
We didn’t know about nudity in Germany before moving here in early 2012 but it seems that Conan was really aware of it and he went to a nude beach to explore how germans handle body shame and body image. Of course, he didn’t go fully nude so you can watch the video above without worrying about his naked body.
But the dominatrix video above can be a little non-safe for work for exactly the reasons you are thinking right now. According to an interview we read in Esquire Magazine, the dominatrix sketch was his least favorite one. Mostly because there is some nipple twisting and because the dominatrix seemed to think that this was for real. As you can see above, she wants to put things inside Conan and we believe that American TV wouldn’t like it that much.
The video above is special for us because it’s the only time that we managed to get close to Conan in Berlin. We read on facebook that Conan would be joining a comedy night in a club in Rummelsburg and we tried to get there early to find some space for us. Too bad we were not the only ones that read about the comedy club appearance on facebook. Once we got to the door, there was a queue with more than 200 people and, after staying there for a few minutes, we realized that we would never get it and we left.
Too bad we missed what it seemed to be another amazingly funny sketch from Conan in Berlin. Maybe he will come back in the near future and Fotostrasse can try to do a better job and hunt him in the streets of Berlin. Maybe, who knows for sure.
