Watching this documentary about Life in Berlin in the 1930s is like entering a time machine straight into the past. The two videos here show a city still being improved by Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich, a little before the Second World War and everything that happened in Berlin.
We have posted old videos of how Life in Berlin used to be before but these two videos we found at British Pathé on Youtube are special. These videos seem to be a part of a short british documentary about life in the German Capital that was never used.
Life in Berlin in the 1930s
These videos are a beautiful way of seeing how Berlin used to look like. Life in Berlin in the 1930s is something that we can only see in videos like these. That is the only way of seeing how Alexanderplatz looked like before it was cleared of debris and designed how it is right now during the russian occupation. The same thing happens with Potsdamer Platz. You can also see how Friedrichstraße looked like when it was still the main street of the city. Even Leipziger Strasse appears in the video showing how busy and beautiful this street used to be.
For us, one of the coolest things to see in these videos is the Berliner Stadtschloss. Built in 1451, it was heavily damaged by Allied bombing in World War II. Some people say that it could have been repaired after the war but the palace was demolished in 1950 by the German Democratic Republic authorities, despite West German protests. Right now, the reconstruction process is on its way and we can expect to see again the Berliner Stadtschloss in 14 September 2019.
Life in Berlin in the 1930s looked a lot different from today. There were German troops marching on the streets, Nazi salutes were the way to greet people and most people wouldn’t even think everything would change in the upcoming years. This was Berlin before the war and the destruction that followed it.
