Discover the Fascinating Lisbon Oceanarium: A Must-Visit Destination in Portugal

Welcome to the Lisbon Oceanarium, an incredible aquarium in a part of town called Parque das Nações. Here, we will provide practical insights about this captivating attraction and guide you through everything you need to know for a memorable visit.

We were twice in Lisbon in 2022, and both times, we went to the Lisbon Oceanarium.

The first time, the weather wasn’t great in the city, and we had to wait some hours before our plane left. So, we headed to the aquarium. On our second time in Lisbon, we talked about the aquarium with some friends who were in town with us, and they liked what they heard so much that we ended up there again.

And we loved both times!

The name of this remarkable aquarium is the Lisbon Oceanarium. If you are feeling a little Portuguese, you can try to call it like the locals do and say Oceanário de Lisboa. It is renowned for its exceptional design, architectural brilliance, and impressive exhibits that showcase the splendors of marine life.

And for being one of the largest aquariums in Europe, only the Oceanografic in Valencia and the Nausicaá in Boulogne-sur-Mer are bigger.

The Lisbon Oceanarium is an extraordinary destination that offers a unique opportunity to explore the stunning underwater world. This architectural masterpiece, designed by Peter Chermayeff in collaboration with Cambridge Seven Associates, resembles an aircraft carrier with some helipads above it. It is situated on a pier within an artificial lagoon, making the surrounding area even more interesting for pictures.

Peter Chermayeff is a renowned designer who has worked on notable aquariums worldwide, including the Osaka Oceanarium Kaiyukan.

Prepare to be astonished by the extensive collection of marine species at the Lisbon Oceanarium. With approximately 16,000 individuals representing 450 species, this attraction offers an awe-inspiring experience. From cute penguins, seagulls, and sea otters to fascinating sharks, rays, seahorses, and jellyfish, you’ll encounter a diverse range of fascinating creatures.

The main highlight is the enormous 1,000 m2 tank that sits in the middle of the aquarium, which holds 5,000,000 liters of water and features four large acrylic windows, providing an unobstructed view of the marine inhabitants. Additionally, four surrounding tanks represent different habitats: the North Atlantic rocky coast, the Antarctic coastal line, the Temperate Pacific kelp forests, and the Tropical Indian coral reefs.

Each with their local animals and flora.

Now that we talked about the Lisbon Aquarium, we know you might have some questions, so let’s see if we can answer them.
