Generations of Berliners have been to Körnerpark, enjoying themselves in this oasis of peace in a hectic Neukölln. People go there to play football, run, walk, relax, and picnic, and we do it too. In 2016, this Neukölln hidden gem celebrated its 100th birthday, and we are here to show you why you need to go there and sing happy birthday to it.
We learned about Körnerpark in the first few weeks after moving to Neukölln in 2012. We saw a green rectangle on the map close to our house and decided to see what it was.
On our first visit, we fell in love with this large park that resembles a palatial garden. It’s just beautiful.
Unwind in Körnerpark: A Tranquil Escape in the Heart of Berlin
But it wasn’t always like that. The park was built where a former gravel pit used to be. Back in 1910, its owner, Franz Körner, handed it over to the city of Rixdorf so that the future park would carry his name. It was an offer the city couldn’t refuse, and this is how Körnerpark got its name.
The construction work took place between 1912 and 1916 in a Neo-baroque style. This style was chosen because the idea was to surround the neighbourhood with something special and adorned. This way, they expected the area to be developed with beautiful buildings matching the park.
This lasted until the Second World War, when the park suffered from increased dilapidation and damage.
Since the park is close to Tempelhof, nobody seemed to care enough to improve it after the war. Remember that Tempelhof was an American military base during the German occupation.
It was only in 1970 that Körnerpark was finally restored. In 1983, the Orangery was reopened as an art gallery, and 2002 the fountains and canals were restored.
Because of all this work, in April 2004, Körnerpark was listed as a historical garden.
Escape to Körnerpark: Find Peace and Beauty in Neukölln
From afar, it’s impossible to see where Kornerpark is. But when you get close, you can see it looks like a large, almost palatial garden with a beautiful flower garden. It has fountains and small canals surrounding the main green field in the middle of the park.
Also, there is the Orangery, where you can find the Galeria am Körnerpark, which hosts many cultural events every week.
You can find Körnerpark between Jonasstraße, Schierker Straße, Selkestraße, and Wittmannsdorfer Straße in Neukölln.
