The Hague is a stunning city in the western part of the Netherlands. It is famous for its historical landmarks, beautiful architecture, and lovely beaches.
As the third-largest city in the country, The Hague has a lot to offer its visitors, making it a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. We had the pleasure of visiting the city in the winter of 2019, and we loved our short stay there, even though it wasn’t enough to see and explore everything we had planned.
But we loved it too much to let it pass, so we decided to share something about the places we liked the most during our visit to the Hague.
If you are planning to visit The Hague, here are some must-see sights you should add to your itinerary:
Panorama Mesdag
One of our favorite places in The Hague is Panorama Mesdag. This unique attraction is a circular painting that displays a panoramic view of the seaside town of Scheveningen in the late 19th century.
The painting is 14 meters high and 120 meters in circumference, creating an impressive optical illusion that makes you feel like you are standing in the middle of the town. Besides the painting, there is also a museum that provides information about its history and the artist Hendrik Willem Mesdag. It’s a fantastic experience that you don’t want to miss.
Hofvijver
Another visually stunning place in the heart of The Hague is Hofvijver. It is a large pond surrounded by beautiful buildings, including the Binnenhof, the seat of the Dutch government. The pond is adorned with swans and ducks, and the scenery is breathtaking, especially during sunrise and sunset.
You might even glimpse the Royal Family’s balcony, which overlooks the pond. It’s a fantastic spot for photography, and it’s free to visit.
M.C. Escher Museum
Lastly, the M.C. Escher Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in art and mathematics. The museum displays the works of Maurits Cornelis Escher, a Dutch artist famous for his optical illusions and impossible constructions.
The museum has many of Escher’s works, including his famous tessellations, metamorphosis, and perspective drawings. You can learn about his life and work, and the museum provides interactive exhibits allowing you to explore Escher’s world. It’s a unique museum that will leave you amazed.
