At the beginning of the year, social media successfully influenced me when they showed me this South Asian-inspired brunch place called Desi Diner in Neukölln.

The place seemed to have a very refreshing take on one of the most sought-after meals in Berlin. And after working around their tricky opening hours (we’ll talk about this later), we finally managed to go!

Desi Diner’s Culinary Adventure: Pakora Waffles, Reuben & More

We started with their Reuben sandwich (€12), with homemade pastrami, swiss cheese, sauerkraut and a hint of mango chutney on a beautifully toasted rye bread; this was a beautiful savory sandwich. The pastrami was super soft and flavorful and contrasted beautifully with the toasty, crunchy bread and the tartness of the sauerkraut. I would love a bit more mango chutney to bring something extra, but that is nitpicking; this sandwich was easily a 9/10.

We also had the Grilled Cheese Paratha (€4), a lovely flatbread filled with a lot of cheese and a tart tamarind chutney sprinkled with coriander. This was a cheese lover’s dream, especially since it is basically cheese, and the flatbread makes it easier to hold while the chutney gives it a lovely, distinct flavor.

But the one that got my heart and made us write this was their Pakora Waffles with Masala Chicken (€14). Oh boy, what a perfectly executed and unique take on chicken and waffles. The onion and spices in the chickpea flour pakora waffles make them much more interesting than regular waffles and make them feel like they are good for you. The juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside chicken is perfectly cooked and seasoned, and just thinking about it makes me want to go back there tomorrow morning. Needless to say, the chilly maple syrup is a match made in heaven for this dish.

Their food is special and beautifully executed; all the dishes we tried were out of the ordinary!

We also had their super delicious Chai (€3) and the filtered coffee (€2.50).

Is Desi Diner Berlin’s Best Kept Brunch Secret?

Now, let’s talk about why I was having beef with Desi Diner. How dare they not open regularly on weekends, when people with full-time in-person jobs like me could go and enjoy their beautiful dishes. Recently, they also started opening on the first Saturday of each month, so we mortals can also come and enjoy their beautiful dishes during the weekends.

We really want this place to have the recognition it deserves, and it kind of worries us that it is in such a hidden area. So, if you are in Neukolln and want to have a delicious breakfast/brunch/lunch, definitely don’t skip Desi Diner!

When we had the pleasure to travel through the Greek Islands with the Running on Waves ship, our first stop was the not so famous (but one of our favourite) island of Syros. After walking in the sun for hours, we decided we deserved some excellent food. That was when we stumbled upon Seariani Fish and More, a charming seafood restaurant in a cute cat-filled alley behind the town square.

Very easy to find but hidden enough to eat in the outside tables with no people passing by.

Like most restaurants in Greece, we were greeted with a massive bottle of cold water and a bowl of the most delicious fluffy and yellow grilled pieces of bread ever with some seasoned olive oil. The staff was insanely friendly, and we felt like we were having lunch with family. This already got me excited to try the rest.

After browsing the menu, we decided to order the fish unique for two people, it might have been the laziest choice, but oh boy, it was also a smart one. The special comes with a salad of choice, three types of fish of the day, one seafood of the day, and a beer or wine for each.

We chose the beautiful traditional Greek salad for the salad, with feta cheese, onions, olives, tomatoes, slivers of green bell peppers, and cucumbers. It was beautifully seasoned and fresh; the saltiness of the cheese and olives goes very well both with our beers and the grilled fish. The rest of our special came served in a big tray, everything grilled to perfection, with seasoned olive oil and lemons for you to make it your own.

You will see that Felipe and I have no clue what the two big ones are, but they were both cooked to perfection, super juicy and flavorful. The same goes for the small anchovies that never let us down in any of the Greek islands.

Now hear me out, the grilled calamari at Seariani Fish and More

The grilled calamari was something else, and it will follow me in my dreams forever. It was so sweet, soft in the middle, and crunchy on the sides, with just a hint of smokiness.

As a consolation prize for the end of the calamari on our plates, we got a refreshing vanilla ice cream with berry sauce, which was also delicious.

Berlin is known as a party place; what can you do around the city when there is a deadly virus and partying hard might not be the best choice? How can we enjoy Berlin when Coronavirus is all we can imagine around us?

You could say I am a bit of an antisocial person. One of the things I love about Berlin is that the city itself is a place to live in.

You can really enjoy the city alone or with your closest chosen people in open spaces.

We have a few excellent ways to enjoy Berlin in Coronavirus times, but nothing is safer than staying at home. We have loads of technology around to make this stay as entertaining and comfy as possible. You can stream everything you might want, have a delivery service of all sorts, enjoy board games, video games for all styles of play, and the whole goddam internet to explore.

Grab a beer in a spaeti and walk…

I know it might seem a bit simple, but this is a city full of history, beautiful canals, street art, and parks, with the plus that you can drink on the street. Just leave your house, get a beer (or whatever is your poison of choice), put on some music, and enjoy.

You can have your closest people with you if you might as well. Moving around keeps you warm if the weather is not fantastic, but remember to dress for it.

In case you are one of those who gets bored quickly, taking pictures of the cool things you see is acceptable to waste some time and see the city with different eyes.

Take your bike and cycle around!

Berlin is a very flat city, so cycling is a great way to commute and enjoy it. You can plan a route with cycle paths if it’s stressful for you to cycle with cars or leave your house and go with the flow.  Having a lovely destination (like something to munch on after the exercise or a beautiful view to recharge) is a great way to avoid getting lazy in the middle of the way.

Remember that Berlin can be annoying to cycle sometimes, as we have mentioned before. Still, some planning can help that a lot; just don’t think you will leave at peak commute time in Sonnenalle and have a chill ride.

It’s time for an Urban picnic!

Eating on the go might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Still, since the lockdown, I have personally started to enjoy grabbing something in a good restaurant and finding a place to eat it with my partner or closest friends. It can be sitting by the canal, on a bench in a park, or just a random square, but having a delicious meal in a semi-precarious way while having a friendly chat is great for a change.

If you can always bring your own food and have a fully socially distant meal.

Don’t forget to get yourself some extra napkins, though.

Just play with your balls

You might not know this, but this city has many places to play ping pong and other ball games. There is even a ping pong table map; if you are lucky, you might find some empty spots. Now, with Coronavirus and Berlin Autumn together? Even emptier!

Fotostrasse finally reaches the end of the road of the #52weeksofburgers challenge, and we end it in a fantastic way at Vincent Burger!
Vincent Burger is this lovely cozy venue in Charlottenburg, quite similar in look and idea to what I believe is their brother restaurant; Rembrandt Burger that we previously enjoyed a bit. Close to it, you can find the supermarket where some of the key scenes in the movie Run Lola Run happened. If you like the movie, get the burger and take pictures of the location, one block away.

We made reservations and headed there on a Tuesday evening, the place is lovely – well decorated, not too big or too small – and the staff is super helpful. For a change, another restaurant that you don’t need to order and get by the counter so that it can be a beautiful date night place.

Felipe ordered the Feuerrot burger (€9,90) with their delicious thicker than the most patty, crispy honey onions, salad, cherry tomato confit, pickles, homemade chervil mayo, and homemade chili paste. This was very tasty, but a huge mess, there was no way to bite this and don’t get messy. The meat is delicious, and the whole grain bread we chose matched it perfectly.

I got the Goldgelb burger (€10,50) with the same patty, cheddar, Maasdam cheese, salad, cherry tomato confit, pickles, homemade chervil mayo, and extra bacon (+€1,5), because why not. This burger was absolutely delicious, a simple burger, pure flavors, but everything was beautifully done and worked amazingly well together. The meat was juicy, and the sweeter brioche topped it off nicely.

via GIPHY

Both burgers come with regular fries, but we updated mine to the Sweet Potato (+€1) with Truffle Mayo (+€1), and Felipe’s to the mixed chips (+€0,5) with the chili con carne and cheese topping (+€1,0) that comes in a lovely little bowl, so your fries don’t get too soggy. They have a few beers and soft drinks also, nothing too fancy.

Overall, this is a lovely place. Everything was super well done and good quality. It’s a shame it is in a place we don’t have many reasons to go to, but if you are around, this is worth it! They also make all of their burgers with Beyond Meat patties! We rate it an 8/10.

Right in the center of the city, this week, Fotostrasse explores Momotaro Tavern for our #52weeksofburgers challenge. This place was recommended to us by a good friend, and it is slightly surprising that we never head of it before considering how central it is.

Cradled under the famous TV Tower, Momotaro Tavern is a small place specialized in the American style smash burgers with an Asian twist. They also have Pho, soups, curries, and more.

Tasty Smash Burgers in Berlin-Mitte

We made reservations and got there on a Monday at lunchtime, the place was starting to burst with people, and I feel like even with reservations we might have problems to get a table if we got there a few moments later. Since it is situated in a very touristic area, the people fighting for a place to sit and not respecting those waiting were all around, adding to that it was quite understaffed and the waiters weren’t able to do much about it.

Felipe ordered the Umami burger (€7.9) with the Angus beef smashed patties, cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, Portobello mushrooms, bacon, and Korean chili mayo. This burger was very tasty, definitely honoring the Umami in the name. The bun was quite soft and got a bit soggy, so a bit on the messier side. I got the American cheese one (€5.9) with the same Angus beef smashed patties, American cheese, 1000 island sauce, salad, tomato, and onions. This burger was amazingly tasty and a simple, well-executed burger.

The smash burgers have this delicious crust to it that you don’t see much around here, the sauce was tasty, the cheese was creamy, and the salad balanced it all up. We got both burgers upgraded to their 50% bigger versions (+€3.50), but they were not huge.

via GIPHY

We got their Sweet potato fries (€4,5) delicious and served with ketchup and mayo and the Chicken Nuggets Kaarage (€5,5). These were deliciously crunchy chicken tights served with mayo and sweet chili sauce, and I would go back to eat a bucket of them, a lovely surprise. They also have excellent beers, alcoholic and soft drinks.

Overall, this place was delicious, but the considerable amount of people for the size and staff situation makes it a bit uncomfortable. I would go back at a less crowded time of the day. I am not sure if I trust the reservation system here too. We would rate it an 8/10 for the food, but the atmosphere makes it a 7/10 for sure.

The amazing Chicken Nuggets Kaarage was €5,5, and the beer was €4.If you are in the area and want a nice savory meal, this might be for you. Keep in mind this can be quite crowded and understaffed depending on the time of the day, but if you have time and patience, the food is worth it.

We are in the last month of the #52weeksofburger challenge and nothing fairer than visiting another vegan place such as Lia’s Kitchen in Prenzlauer Berg. Lia’s Kitchen is an entirely vegan venue, with the main focus on the different kinds of vegan patties that fill their burgers up.

Lia’s Kitchen is quite small but cozy, with very few tables on the inside and bigger ones on the outside. So if you are considering going with a lot of people, make sure it is on a warmer/dryer day. As usual, order by the counter and grab it later.

We ate The Oyster-Shiitake Mushroom Burger (€8.9) with a shiitake and black lentils patty, salad, and mustard sauce. We both got the same burger, but completely different opinions on it. Felipe loved it for the abundance of mustard (it is his favorite condiment) and a denser bread. For me, the food was a bit too thick in comparison to the very soft, almost paté like shiitake patty.

Every time we took a bite, the patty squished through the sides, and while chewing, it melted in my mouth, and all it was left was bread and (a lot of) mustard. Textures aside, this was a delicious creation, maybe just not for me.

via GIPHY

We got our burgers in the menu option, with fries, coleslaw, and a drink for an extra €4,9 or sweet potato fries, coleslaw, and a drink for €5,9. The coleslaw was a bit underwhelming, the fries were pretty lovely, but we fell in love with the vegan mayos here, both spicy and regular ones are delicious.

Overall, this is a delightful vegan place, but not mind-blowing. We might come back with vegan friends and try the other options, but not something we would leave our house to go to. We rate it a 7/10.

This week of the #52weeksofburger challenge, Fotostrasse goes to Belushi’s in Mitte. Belushi’s is part of a popular chain hostel, and the bar is a hot spot for those who want to watch some games, have a nice beer and eat something.
Belushi’s is a big place, two floors with a bunch of big tables, many TVs playing different matches at the same time, and some beautiful music playing. You order some food and beers on the counter, and they bring it to you.

Felipe got the Aussie Works (€10) with a grilled beef burger, melted cheese, bacon, grilled pineapple, fried egg, beetroot, and ketchup. This was a big boy, but quite underwhelming, the bread was awful; super dry, and it fell apart the moment we first grabbed it.

The meat felt more like a squished meatball than a burger in texture and taste, which I know appeals to some but not my favorite. I was expecting to taste more of the pineapple or the beetroot, but they all became one big mushy taste. Maybe thicker slices or fresher ingredients would help here.

I got the Patty Melt (€8), which was a grilled double cheese sandwich, with a bit of butter and garlic mayo on the outside and their patty on the inside. This was way nicer than Felipe’s; the typical white sandwich bread was tastier and sturdier than their hamburger bread.

The patty was the same; it became less disappointing when I thought of it as a meatloaf slice and not as a burger. Could have more of the garlic mayo, it would be awesome.

via GIPHY

We chose to try their Potato Wedges (€4) that should come with sour cream and a sweet chili dip, but it came with a weird salsa and tortilla chips. Felipe’s burger came with fries on the side, but we chose to try their Cajun Fries (€3,5 or +€2 with the burger). Delicious potato wedges and perfectly seasoned, so go with these ones if you have to choose!

They have a lot of delicious draught and bottled beers, all around €4, and cocktails, spirits, shots, wines, and soft drinks.

Overall, this is a lovely place to have beers and a snack, but not our favorite for burgers. The price is a bit high for the quality, if you must eat there, it is ok, but we wouldn’t move our asses there just for the food.

We rate it a 6/10.

www.belushis.com/bars/berlinThe Patty Melt was €8, the Cajun Fries were €3,5, and the Beer is around €4.If you want to go to a bar with excellent beers and cocktails, watch a game and eat something, this might be for you. The burgers are not our favorite, but the Cajun Fries were pretty decent, and there are a lot of beer options.

For another week of the #52weeksofburgers challenge, Fotostrasse visits the fancy Kumpel & Keule Speisewirtschaft in Kreuzberg. We visited the Kumpel & Keule stand in Markethalle Neun in September, and since then, we have been curious about their proper restaurant near Gorlitzer Park. Since this was the week of my birthday and I wanted a beautiful place to eat, we decided to pamper ourselves and try this place out.

We got there on a Friday evening, the place is beautiful and has only a few big tables, so I would highly recommend making reservations, especially on weekends. This has to be the best service we’ve seen in a long time. The staff is simply delightful, and I felt I could not have chosen a better place to spend a special night.

We had two starters, the Tatare (€14) with lovely roasted capers and a cured yolk, and the Goose Taco (€9) with Gooseberries and mulled wine sauce. Both were beautiful, with exciting and robust flavors.

Felipe ordered the Goose Burger (€13) a pulled pork style goose meat in a cranberry sauce with Italian cabbage and pickles in a Sironi Bun. This was delicious, sweet, and tangy, and the meat taste is very rich in a lovely way.

I felt like it wasn’t as surprising as it could be since we had the goose tacos as an entree, and they have a similar flavor profile. And we were hoping for a goose patty, but still a beautiful dish.

I got the traditional Dry Aged Classic Burger (€11)with a dry-aged beef patty, extra bacon (+€2), ox heart tomato, lamb’s lettuce in a Sironi Bun. This is the king of the burgers for me! It is one of the most delicious and balanced burgers we had in this year-long burger challenge.

As for sides, we got their Fat Carrots (€8) with fried carrots and a delicious mango sauce, and we also got their Fries (€6) with their simply phenomenal pear and goose fat mayo. Hear me out: this is out of this world. Super decadent and flavorful, what a treat.

We had the Schmalzkuss (€10) a creamy chocolate mousse with a crumble made with lard, an unexpected dessert, but quite delicious. They have soft drinks, beers, wine, schnapps, and cocktails for all tastebuds.

Overall, this is a fantastic place for a special date or just a gastronomic extravaganza. The food is of high quality and beautifully done, the service is excellent, and we cannot wait to come back and have the steaks!

The price is higher than in most places, but for the quality, I feel it is correctly priced. Keep in mind nothing here is vegan/vegetarian-friendly. We rate it a 10/10.

This week Fotostrasse explores Kreuzberg for the #52weeksofburgers challenge and have some fun in Kreuzburger. Nestled in the middle of concert venues and bars, Kreuzburger is quite a popular place to have a post-drinking snack in Oranienstrasse.

The place is medium-sized so it might accommodate all your drunk friends, the music is quite loud, and the staff is helpful. It’s the classic you order on the counter and go and grab it later.

Felipe ordered the special Kiez Menu (€10), and the burger in it had; a 100gr patty, garlic sausage, fried egg, cheese, salad, and a fuck ton of sauce. This one would be so much nicer with half of the sauce, but it was a mediocre plus in general, we love an egg in our burgers anyway.

I got the Friedrichshainer (€5,9) with a 200gr Black Angus patty (+€3,2), sauce, salad, and a breaded piece of cheese. Even the patty being probably frozen, it was more beautiful than the one in Felipe’s burger, way meatier. The breaded cheese was lovely, but it could be bigger. And the amount of sauce was better in this one but still more than needed.

We got the Pommes in Felipe’s menu, Onion Rings (€3,90), and Cheddar Jalapeño Poppers (€3,90). The first two were ok, but the Poppers were so tasty we came back and ate some a few days later. They have beers and soft drinks, and they are around €3,00.

Overall, this is not a bad place, and not remarkable either; the prices are a bit higher than usual for the quality. We would probably go back after too many beers to have more poppers, but I wouldn’t leave the house to go there. We rate it a 7/10.

It is a bit more expensive than we wished for the quality, but it isn’t terrible, though.

Fotostrasse decides to leave all meat out of this week’s menu, and munch at the vegan Loveburger in Neukölln. Loveburger is a decently sized and recently opened 100% vegan burger place in Neukölln, so we decided to give it a go.

We got there on a Thursday evening, the place is beautifully decorated. And the staff is lovely, it seems inviting both for a quick bite or a more extended, chatty meal.

Felipe ordered the Italienisch (€7,9) with a homemade Italian patty with green lentils and veggies, lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, onions, red peppers, sundried tomatoes, olives, ketchup, and basil mayo. This was awesome, super flavorful and fresh.

I love when veggie burgers don’t try to look like they are meat, and this one takes all the freshness of the ingredients to the next level.

I got the special burger Indonesisch (€8) with marinated teriyaki tempeh and pumpkin, baked aubergine, Asian plum BBQ sauce, sesame mayo, perilla, peanuts, lettuce, cucumbers, red peppers, onions, and mint. This was a more massive burger with the creaminess of the tempeh and the pumpkin. But the cucumbers and mint balanced that quite a bit, and I am a massive fan of the crunchy random peanuts in the middle of it to bring another texture to the game.

We are not big fans of the bread, it felt a bit dry, but the rest is super fresh and tasty.

We ordered some Sweet Potato Fries (€3,50), delicious but nothing too out of the ordinary, and some Potato Wedges (€2,50), and these are our absolute favorite, excellent rustic fries with a crunchy outside and an almost creamy and fluffy inside. Both came with ketchup and mayo that were also very good. They have an excellent range of craft beers and a lot of options for soft drinks.

Overall this is a lovely comfy place to eat an excellent vegan burger that makes the best out of their fresh ingredients. We rate it a 7/10.

It is not as mindblowing as Ryong burgers are for us, but it is a pretty honest burger place indeed.
