40 Stansfield Road: Bowie’s Childhood Home
Visiting David Bowie’s childhood home at 40 Stansfield Road in Brixton is a must to glimpse his early years. And something completely different from the apartment where he used to live, in Berlin-Schöneberg, years later. While the house remains a private residence, its exterior connects to Bowie’s humble beginnings.
Young David Robert Jones, later to become David Bowie, spent his formative years within these walls. The house, nestled among brick homes on a quiet street, is a reminder of Bowie’s journey from a Brixton boy to a global superstar.
Although there are no official markers or plaques commemorating Bowie’s time here, the house holds a special significance for fans who come to pay their respects and imagine the early life of their musical hero. This was an unusually weird place to visit since I couldn’t pinpoint the real house when I was there. There are no signs, plaques, or anything else, so it felt less interesting than the other places. And I have to let you know about that.
