When we arrived in Helsinki in September 2014, we knew the city would show its weird side immediately. It always happens to us when we travel. Maybe, we attract this kind of thing, but we still don’t know why we drew a huge pissing statue like the one we found on Helsinki’s harbor.
Peeing in public is something our mothers didn’t want us to do. Sometimes, it happens, but we hide somewhere so nobody can see what we are doing. But this statue is not hidden at all. It sits in the middle of Helsinki’s harbor next to where you catch the ferries to travel around the islands. Everywhere you look, you are going to see it. But what is that?
Helsinki’s Pissing Statue has a name: Bad Bad Boy.
This weird-looking giant boy appeared next to the Finnair Sky Wheel by the Market Square in August 2014. He isn’t embarrassed by what he is doing, so he continues to do what he wants there.
The statue is called Bad Bad Boy, from Tommi Toija, who had an exhibition called Mutatis Mutandis at Amos Anderson Art Museum.
In a way, this sculpture reminds us of the famous Manneken Pis from Brussels. But this pissing statue doesn’t look as friendly as the Belgian one. The pissing figure of Helsinki looks like it doesn’t want to be there. Its angry face shows an embarrassment that we hope we never reach.
Since this statue belongs to Mutatis Mutandis at Amos Anderson Art Museum, and that exhibition lasted until October 27, we are not sure it still stands there.
Probably, it is gone by now. At least we have the pictures to prove that Helsinki had the guts to have a giant pissing statue on its harbor.

EDIT: After we wrote this article, we discovered this statue moved to the other Harbor in Helsinki. It can still be seen around the area on the map above.
