London’s rich history is etched in its countless monuments, many honoring heroes and pioneers. But tucked away in a peaceful corner of Islington, a unique statue celebrates a different kind of legend: Street Cat Bob.
I often go to London for work, and whenever I’m there, I look for different places to visit and explore. On a trip in the summer of 2024, I went looking for cats and found the Street Cat Bob Memorial in Islington, close to the Angel Underground station. And I knew I had to write an article about it.
London’s Street Cat Bob Memorial: A Furry Friend Immortalized in Bronze
You might already know Bob and James Bowen’s incredible story if you’re a fan of heartwarming tales. When found injured and alone, this ginger cat formed an inseparable bond with James, a struggling busker. Together, they faced homelessness and addiction, Bob’s calming presence providing the support James needed to turn his life around.
The story of their journey inspired a series of bestselling books and a popular film, touching the hearts of millions. Bob’s passing in 2020 at the age of 14 created a void in the city, but his spirit lives on in the beautiful bronze statue unveiled in 2021. When I learned about it, I knew I had to go there to pay my respects to Bob.
Nestled in Islington Green, a part of London I often walk around, the life-size sculpture depicts Bob perched on his favorite stack of books, a familiar sight from the many photos taken of him. The artist, Tanya Russell, captured Bob’s essence perfectly, and his signature scarf added a personal touch.
A nearby pink granite bench invites visitors to rest and reflect. Engraved with a quote from James about his beloved companion, it’s a peaceful spot to soak in the story and appreciate the unique bond between a man and his cat.
