The last original standard meter is called mètre étalon in French and is a small piece of marble that can be found on a wall next to rue Vaugirard 36, across the street from the Senate at the Palais du Luxembourg. This is the only one of 16 that still exist today, and all of them were installed in 1791 when the Académie des Sciences defined what would be the meter.

Hidden in plain sight at the Rue Saint-Jacques in Paris, you can find a surrealist timepiece created by an artist famous for his melting clocks. Salvador Dalí installed this concrete sculpture in 1966 with the artist and his pet ocelot. There was also a brass band, and this is pretty much everything we managed to find out about the opening ceremony. Too bad.

The Landwehr Canal is one of our favorite places to spend warm Saturday afternoons, just walking along it. But, it can be a pretty exciting place to explore in winter as well since, from time to time, it freezes completely. A frozen Landwehr Canal is what happened on the last weekend of February 2018, and we went there to take pictures of everything.

Back in 1999, local historian Christian Bormann found something that it wasn’t supposed to be lost. Nine years after demolition began, he found a piece of the Berlin Wall, somehow forgotten in the woods between a train station and a supermarket. More than 80 meters of the original Berlin Wall, built in 1961, is standing there, some with the V-shaped brackets that once had barbed wire on it. It’s hard to believe that something with this historical importance was lost and this is why we went there to see it with our own eyes.

Neukölln is a weird place in Berlin. At first glance, the neighborhood looks like a clash of cultures or, maybe, the future of Germany. Far away from the tourists the flock Berlin there is a neighborhood called Kaulsdorf, and it’s there that you will find the lonely hippo known as Knautschke after a famous hippo that was born in the Berlin Zoo back in 1943. Knautschke has the entire Freibad Wernersee to himself but, when I was there, I didn’t see he enjoying much of it. Maybe it was cold; maybe it was the fact that the pool was frozen. Maybe he was just waiting for a time where he would have company, but this will, probably, never happen.
