Sometimes I go on Youtube and search for movies related to Berlin in any way. This is how I discovered some of the youtube videos I have written about here, and this is how I found out about Background to Berlin, a NATO Information Service movie that explains, in a little less than 30 minutes, the history of the German capital from 1945 to 1961.

If you like Berlin techno, the web series After Hours might not be new for you. This documentary about Berlin’s techno scene premiered into the world back in 2009, on the long gone website 3min.de. After the site was gone, this music series disappeared from the internet but, this week, we found a page on Facebook that seems to be publishing all of the 12 episodes of the series into Youtube. Now, you can watch everything below!

The people that live in Helsinki are lucky to live there. Their city is one of my favorite places on the planet and they also have an amazing national park pretty close to the city. So, if you want to take a break from the city life, Nuuksio is the best place to do that.

Back in 1999, local historian Christian Bormann found something that it wasn’t supposed to be lost. Nine years after demolition began, he found a piece of the Berlin Wall, somehow forgotten in the woods between a train station and a supermarket. More than 80 meters of the original Berlin Wall, built in 1961, is standing there, some with the V-shaped brackets that once had barbed wire on it. It’s hard to believe that something with this historical importance was lost and this is why we went there to see it with our own eyes.

Walled in! – The inner German border is a computer animation produced by Deutsche Welle together with the Berlin Wall Foundation to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall. The short movie describes in details the fortifications and the way that the border between East and West Germany was set up and it’s an excellent resource for those who want to know more about it.

During the years where Nick Cave was living in Berlin, back in the 1980’s, he was filmed for a Dutch documentary called Stranger in a Strange Land. Produced by Bram van Splunteren for the Dutch TV channel VPRO, you get a glimpse of the life of Nick Cave in Berlin even though some parts of the movie are voice-over in dutch. But you don’t need to worry about it, all the interviews with Nick Cave are in English.

It was August 21, 1988, and four people decided to risk their lives crossing the Spree River in an attempt of escaping East Germany in hope for freedom in West Berlin. Three men and a woman risked their lives and watching it today make everything look like a distant event in the past, but that was Berlin at the time.

Neukölln is a weird place in Berlin. At first glance, the neighborhood looks like a clash of cultures or, maybe, the future of Germany. But, in the back streets, you can find a glimpse of the past, and this is called Popraci, a hay roll race that has been happening for ten years yet most people don’t even know it exists. Fotostrasse got together with a few friends and put a team to race in this year Popraci Neukölln 2017, and here you can read everything about it.

If you ever wondered why Strasse des 17. Juni has its name, you have to watch this short movie from British Pathé from the Berlin Riots of 1953. This short movie is not a documentary but a newsreel report about the uprising of workers against the Communist Regime in East Germany. This is the real deal, not an interpretation of what happened.

If you go back to Fotostrasse archives you’ll see that we love to see old videos of Berlin. This short one from Berlin in 1936 is no exception since it shows how beautiful the city used to be and focus on the changes that were happening to the German capital during the time it was governed by the Nazi party.

There are a lot of late night hosts on American TV but our favorite has been Conan O’Brien for quite a long time. With this in mind, you can imagine how excited we were when we realized that there would be a Conan in Berlin tour. Too bad we never manage to be in the right place at the right time but we can be happy to watch now everything that Conan did in Berlin back in September 2016.

The Berlin Wall is the reason why Berlin had some ghost stations. Most of them were on the S-Bahn line S2, the U-Bahn line U6 and the U8. Those lines travelled through what was then East Berlin on their way back into West Berlin. Trains could go through it but the stations were sealed off and heavily guarded. This happened because, when the Berlin Wall went up, some people realized that they could escape using the train lines. After the East German police realized that, they closed down the stations. This way the stations couldn’t be used as a possible mean to escape to West Berlin.

The Berlin Wall was a scar that can still be seen today in the german capital. It split the city into east and west, capitalism and communism, from 1961 to 1989. When it fell, it united the country again and made Germany what it is today.

After the First World War, Berlin had this moment of glory during the twenties. Those years were so important to the city that some people call it The Golden Twenties and they are right when it comes to the name. Because of all of this, this video from the Summer of 1929 in Berlin is a special one.

Since we moved to Berlin, early in 2012, we have been researching how this city used to look like before all the wars. This week we stumbled upon this really interesting short movie that shows Berlin streets between 1900 and 1914, a little before the First World War.

These extraordinary and never-before-seen home movies were filmed by a German-American family who visited Berlin and Germany during the Olympic Games in 1936. They give a good idea of what a tourist might have experienced. The film begins with shots aboard the liner Deutschland during the trans-Atlantic crossing, including a visit to the ship's bridge, dancing on deck to music provided by the ship's band, and more.
