Berlin is a city full of surprises, and tucked away in the charming neighborhood of Neukölln-Britz lies one truly charming – Buschrosenplatz. This square might seem ordinary from the ground, but take to the skies, and you’ll witness something truly magical.
My curiosity about Buschrosenplatz was sparked while exploring the construction site that used to be Blub Berlin. I was browsing satellite images on Google Maps when a peculiar shape caught my eye. Could it be? Was Buschrosenplatz arranged in the shape of a child with raised arms? Was that for real or a weird glitch?
I had to see it for myself. So, on a November morning in 2021, I grabbed my drone and biked to the southern part of Neukölln. At first glance, the square appeared as expected. But as my drone ascended, the true beauty of Buschrosenplatz unfolded. The walking paths intertwined, forming the outline of a child with a rose nestled at its center.
Soaring Above Buschrosenplatz: Berlin’s Secret Child-Shaped Square
I spent a few minutes flying my DJI Mini, capturing countless photos of this unique perspective. As I explored further, I thought about sharing more information about this square and the thought process behind its design—at least from the small amount of information that I managed to get during my research.
I did learn that the square is snuggled between Hannemannstraße and Buschrosensteig. Historical records show that in 1933, Buschrosenplatz was home to six apartment houses owned by the building cooperative Ideal. These buildings, now listed as historical monuments, add to the square’s rich tapestry.
However, the mystery surrounding this unusual shape remains unsolved, and I’m still seeking information about it. Yet, I can’t help but admire the effort put into making it so special. Most people will never witness its aerial artistry, but someone envisioned a square that transcends the ordinary. And for that, I’m grateful.
Buschrosenplatz reminds us that the most extraordinary experiences sometimes lie beyond our everyday perception. So, next time you’re exploring Berlin, keep your eyes peeled—and your drone ready—for hidden gems like Buschrosenplatz. You never know what wonders you might uncover.
