We loved everywhere we were in Finland but this place has a special place in our heart. It is hard to describe why but, we believe that, after you see the pictures below, you are going to understand a little bit of why we like this place so much.
Herrankukkaro used to be a fisherman’s homestead and still looks like one. It’s located in the heart of the Southwestern Finnish archipelago and you reach it from Turku in less than 30 minutes by car. This is how we got there in the middle of the summer. We had just got back from our tour of Aland and we looking forward to get back there.
Since we only been to Herrankukkaro in the winter time, we were looking forward to see how the place looks like during the summer months. And it looks even more beautiful than we thought it would. There were flowers everywhere and green foliage surrounding us everywhere we went. It felt like a trip back in time.
A trip back into when the place was still used by fisherman. Now everything is changed and Herrankukkaro became a place for recreation, conferences and instructional courses. But this old time era still surrounds the place.
On our first time in Herrankukkaro, we slept in a boat stationed on the small harbor they have. This time we stayed in a cosy small room that felt like something from a movie. Something out of a pirate movie, we have to say. Sleeping there was like we were alone in the world and, of course, waking up the next day was a problem. A good problem but still something to worry about.
But you shouldn’t visit Herrankukkaro only because of the amazing time we had sleeping there. Of course not. You have to visit Herrankukkaro because of the aura this place has. It is hard to describe how something like that feels but you will know what we are talking about the moment you get there.
One of the main activities that we wanted to do while in Herrankukkaro was to see the Ukkopekka steamship working between Turku and Naantali. The old steamship belongs to the same family that takes care of Herrankukkaro and does daily cruises and we hunted it down before it arrived in Turku just to take a few pictures of it.
Too bad it was too windy on our way back or we could have explored a few of the islands that lay where the Aura River meets the sea. Next time.
When we were getting back from our short boat trip, we saw one of the many activities they have in Herrankukkaro. There were around 12 people about to row a fyke boat into the summer evening just to enjoy the beauty of the archipelago landscape.
But if you are afraid of boats and the water, don’t worry. There are a lot of things that you can do in this magical place. From archery to skiing, they have something from anybody that like outdoor activities.
Herrankukkaro is an amazing place that caught our heart during the summer and the winter and the same will happen to you as well. Trust us on this. When you plan to visit the place, it is better to get in touch with them before since the Herrankukkaro area is only open by advanced booking.
Call Karioskari Kangas, Oskari like he told us to call him, and tell him you learned about Herrankukkaro on Fotostrasse. Or send him a e-mail, it is faster. You just need to go there and try to enjoy it as much as we did.
