Pfunds Molkerei is the world’s most beautiful milk shop and an unforgettable experience in Dresden. Located in the heart of the Dresden Neustadt, Pfunds Molkerei is a must-see destination for anyone interested in art, architecture, and dairy products.
Our first time visiting the shop was in Dresden back in the summer of 2014. You couldn’t take pictures inside the shop at the time for some reason we never fully understood. But, on our second visit to the shop in 2021, things changed a bit, and we took some pictures to show you how gorgeous this place is.
Pfunds Molkerei was founded in 1880 by Max Pfund, who wanted to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing space.
Today, it’s known for its stunning interior design, which features intricate tile work, ornate stucco ceilings, and colorful frescoes. Visitors can marvel at the shop’s beauty while sampling a variety of cheeses, yogurts, and other dairy products made on-site.
One of the most impressive features of Pfunds Molkerei is its tile work. The shop boasts hundreds of hand-painted tiles covering the walls, floors, and ceilings. Local artists created the tiles in the late 19th century. They depicted pastoral scenes, floral motifs, and even famous landmarks worldwide.
Each tile is unique, especially designed and put together for this place. Together they create a breathtaking mosaic of color and design while showing the regional tradition of ceramic artwork.
In addition to its tile work, Pfunds Molkerei also features ornate stucco ceilings designed to reflect the Renaissance and Baroque styles of architecture. The ceilings are adorned with intricate patterns, cherubs, and other decorative elements, making them a feast for the eyes. Visitors can also admire the shop’s frescoes, which depict scenes from daily life in the 19th century.
For us, this shop feels like a time capsule of how life was in Dresden before the Second World War and the destruction it caused to the city.
Of course, only a visit to Pfunds Molkerei would be complete with sampling some of its delicious dairy products. The shop produces a range of cheeses, yogurts, and other dairy products using traditional methods and high-quality ingredients. Visitors can try samples of these products and purchase them to take home, as we did. And remember to try out their famous buttermilk!
The Pfunds Molkerei is a unique and unforgettable destination that combines art, architecture, and dairy products beautifully and uniquely. If you’re a cheese lover or an art enthusiast, visiting this stunning milk shop will surely leave you with lasting memories.
So if you’re planning a trip to Dresden, add Pfunds Molkerei to your itinerary. You won’t regret it.
We visited Dresden and the Moritzburg Castle in the summer of 2021 by invitation from Visit Dresden.
Our friends from Canal Alemanizando were there with us, and they also did a great video about the trip. If you speak Portuguese, this might be the video for you.
