Some say that the best thing about winter time is the snow and everything that you can do with it. But Fotostrasse says, without thinking twice, that the best thing about winter is the Christmas Markets. And Prague has some of the most charming ones I have ever seen. I spent some time in Prague in early December and even though it was too fast, I managed to find some time in my schedule to enjoy a couple of the best Prague Christmas Markets.

It’s not just the lights that make Prague such a unique atmosphere for Christmas Markets. You have lights and Christmas Trees everywhere but you don’t have a gorgeous city like Prague everywhere. This is why I loved the Christmas Markets there so much. You have this charming place, filled with gifts and great food. Then you look around and you are in the middle of one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It’s to take your breath away. Easily.
You can start with some warm mulled wine and a nice juicy ham sandwich and with some mustard like I did. Or you can try some hot mead and a sweet trdelnik. When it comes to food, Prague Christmas Markets have a lot of options and all of them seem to be more than amazing. You just have to try and see how much can you eat in the end.
The most popular Christmas Market in Prague is the one at Old Town Square but I only managed to walk through it. It was too big and crowded for my personal tastes but everybody seemed to be having a lot of fun there. My focus in Prague was on the smaller ones below.
Náměstí Míru, my first of many Prague Christmas Markets
The Christmas Market at Náměstí Míru was the first one I decided to explore in Prague. This square was close to the hotel I picked up so it was easy to find based on the amazing smell of food I felt when I was trying to catch a bus to Vysehrad.
Náměstí Míru is a central square in the neighborhood known as Vinohrady. The name of the square can be a little hard for those, like me, that have no knowledge of the Czech language. But Náměstí Míru means Peace Square if you wanted to know.
This small Christmas Market has everything the bigger ones had but it feels cozier. I’m not sure if it’s the presence of the Church of St. Ludmila that dominates the square or the fact that I went there still during the day. I know that I ate a sweet trdelnik with a beer and it was a great start to my day exploring Prague.
The Christmas Market at Náměstí Míru is open from November 20th to December 24th.
The Christmas Market at Náměstí Republiky
After a long day walking around Prague, from the Vysehrad cemetery and following the Vltava river all the way to Old Town, I manage to find another Christmas Market that some friends advised me to go: the one at Náměstí Republiky.
Náměstí Republiky can be translated as Republic Square and sits where the moat used to be between the New and the Old Town in Prague. The location was perfect for me since it’s located between a lot of really beautiful architecture, with a subway stop just underneath the market but it was still kind of empty. So I could have a small table for me, my mulled wine, beer and ham sandwich.
And what an amazing ham sandwich it was. It was so good and memorable that I filmed while it was being cooked and I had to bring it to this article as a gif for you to see how it was done and how my face looked after tasting it for the first time.

There also some donkeys, goat and other farm animals at the Christmas Market at Náměstí Republiky and I’m pretty sure families would love this market. It’s kind of small but it has everything the bigger ones have. There was beer, a huge Christmas Tree, mulled wine, trdelnik and an amazing ham sandwich. Next time I’m in Prague during the Holiday Season, I know I will have to find my way here. Those Christmas markets were just one of the many reasons why you should visit Prague in the winter time.
