Berlin is a city steeped in history, and one of its dark chapters can be seen inside the Stasi Museum in Lichtenberg. Located on Normannenstraße, east of the city center, this museum was once the headquarters of the Ministry for State Security, or “Stasi,” the East German secret police. If you’re interested in understanding the chilling reality of life under surveillance, visiting the Stasi Museum Berlin is a must.
I visited the Stasi Museum in Berlin for the first time in the winter of 2020, and the pictures you can see here are from that day. It was a few weeks before the world changed with the COVID-19 pandemic, and because of that, it was my last tourist experience in Berlin before that. It remained fresh in my mind for months after my visit.
I was there with a friend who had been to Berlin several times. When discussing places to go, he wanted to see something outside the basics. This is how we decided to go to Lichtenberg and visit the complex of buildings where the Ministry of State Security in East Germany used to be.

The Stasi Museum is housed in the original building complex operated by the Ministry of State Security. Inside the building, you will find the same halls where Stasi officers planned their operations.
One of the many highlights for me was seeing Erich Mielke‘s office preserved just as he left it, which was an eerie experience. This is especially true because Erich Mielke, the head of the Stasi from 1957 until the fall of the Berlin Wall, was a powerful figure who controlled the lives of millions and kept an eye on everything.
From Surveillance to Freedom: Exploring the Stasi Museum in Berlin
The museum’s exhibits reveal the Stasi’s extensive surveillance network and the technology behind it. Visitors can see the actual spy equipment they used, like hidden cameras and bugs.
They can also learn how the Stasi recruited informants and controlled the population. I found it extremely interesting to hear the personal testimonies of people who lived under Stasi surveillance, as they offered a chilling insight into the Stasi’s impact on their lives.
The second floor of the museum has remained untouched since the Stasi era. Desks, chairs, and filing cabinets are ghostly reminders of the past. The only things missing are the Stasi files, which are so vast that they’re still being processed today.

The Stasi Museum is easily accessible by public transportation. Take the U5 line to Magdalenenstraße or the S-Bahn to Frankfurter Allee. The museum is open daily, and a Berlin Welcome Card offers discounts on admission.
Berlin offers other opportunities to delve deeper into its history. You can explore exhibitions about the fall of the Berlin Wall and visit the archives of the Federal Commissioner for the Stasi documents. Former prisons, like Hohenschönhausen, offer guided tours by former prisoners, providing firsthand accounts of life under the regime.

A visit to the Stasi Museum Berlin is a sobering experience. The museum reminds us of the power of a totalitarian state and the importance of protecting individual freedoms.
It offers a unique opportunity to learn about a dark chapter in history, visit the original location of where the Stasi stood, and understand the human cost of oppression in the Cold War.
