In episode 5, when Noah meets Michael, there is a church in the background. An interesting looking church that made us curious about it and we had to try to find out where is this church located.
We learned about the location of this church from Dark through our friends at Canal Alemanizando, and you can find it at the Südwestkirchhof Stahnsdorf. The cemetery used to be connected to Wannsee via a railroad that it’s now abandoned. These are the train tracks that appeared on another episode under a bridge.
In the episode, Michael is there to see where his father is buried. Which makes sense since this cemetery is the second largest one in Germany, and it has a beautiful forest character that makes the experience of walking around pretty interesting even though it was the end of winter when we visited the area.
There are a lot of historic tombs in the, including the one from Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau who directed the movie Nosferatu. But we went there to see the cemetery chapel!
The cemetery chapel from Südwestkirchhof Stahnsdorf was built between 1908 and 1911, and it follows the plans from Gustav Werner. The church has an interesting Norwegian style, and it’s all made of wood. Inside, the wooden decoration is presented together with Art Nouveau glass windows and an organ by Wilhelm Sauer that is all original. Too bad the church was locked when we tried to get it.
The trip to Stahnsdorf is, somehow, not that simple but the visit we did to the cemetery and the church was more than worth it. Even if we weren’t fans of the series Dark, it would be cool to explore the area. There is a lot to see there.
The Südwestkirchhof Stahnsdorf is a little bit tricky to arrive since it’s located between Berlin and Brandenburg, in an area that is not that populated. If you want to visit the place, get a train to Teltow and cycle to the church. Or you can try to follow our trail of Dark locations and take a train to Wannsee and walk through the forest. And, since you are already in Stahnsdorf, you should explore the abandoned sanatorium there!
