At the end of 2018, while everyone was deciding their healthy new years’ resolutions, we went the other direction and decided to challenge ourselves to eat a burger every week of 2019, the beginning of this journey was at Shiso Burger.
Shiso burger caught our eye for the Asian inspired burgers, this lovely little place in Mitte is excellent if you want to get away from the traditional options and have a lot of flavors.
We got there on a Saturday afternoon and sat down right away, service in this place is outstanding and super fast, even wholly crowded. The place has a very modern vibe, the many drawings hanging on the wall and the slightly loud music make it fell very young. If you are looking for a place to enjoy a few hours eating, chatting and stuff, this might not be it, mainly because the tables are very close to each other.
We started with steamed edamame beans (€4,5) they are always delicious and fun to eat, Felipe ordered a beer (€4,5), and I decided it would be nice to try a very refreshing Pink Shiso Ice Tea (€4,5). Then it was time to choose our burgers, that come with size options to my surprise! Felipe chose the Double Salmon Burger (€11,5), and I got a large Bulgogi Burger (€9,2), by our choices you can see we are not purists so we will try the weirdest options if we can.
Bulgogi is a Korean dish made with thinly sliced meat marinated in a delicious and slightly sweet and spicy sauce, and you will have a very well seasoned version of this in the Bulgogi Burger! To go with that, there’s also lettuce, fried onions, and chili mayo but the meat is the star here for sure. I rated this an 8/10 in flavor, 4/10 texture. This is also a very messy burger to eat, it was leaking the marinade a lot, doesn’t bother me that much but it is important to note.
The Double Salmon Burger had two perfectly cooked pieces of salmon, super juicy and flavourful and very well complemented by the miso sauce, cream cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and red onions. This was also kind of messy to eat. I rated this a 7/10 in flavor, 5/10 texture. The buns here are very special, they are so soft and squishy, look and taste a little bit like steamed bao buns, and they are my favorite part about this place!
We also had sweet potato fries (€4,5) and got a little bit surprised by the shape of them, they are cut in rectangles, and it doesn’t bring out the crunch potential of them, but they tasted outstanding! The fries come with a tiny serving of catchup and mayo, nothing special here.
The flavors are amazing, but I have to take some points from both burgers when it comes to texture, everything is too soft so a bit of crunchiness would turn this into a much more exciting meal.
We both ordered the bigger versions of the burgers with two sides, and I could quickly eat more afterward, so if you are a light eater this might be ideal but if you are a hungry one like us, maybe go somewhere else or enjoy the opportunity to eat more than one burger!
If you are interested in amazing burgers this is a great place, food is very well seasoned, service is fast, they take cards, and it is effortless to get to.
