When you live in Berlin, you end up exploring the same neighborhoods all the time. It’s easier like that, but you might miss a lot of great spots. To fix this, I decided to explore a famous part of Berlin that I usually don’t visit often. Because of my lack of knowledge, I decided to spend 48 hours there just to see what could I see and do in one of the most famous areas of the German capital.

If you are a walk along where the Berlin Wall used to be around Bernauer Strasse, you will see a meat mural that might be our favorite street art piece in Berlin. This enormous painting shows the side of buildings being cut by a large knife with the shape of the city being represented in some white tissue. For us, this shows how the Berlin Wall was a scar running along the city.

Far away from the tourists the flock Berlin there is a neighborhood called Kaulsdorf, and it’s there that you will find the lonely hippo known as Knautschke after a famous hippo that was born in the Berlin Zoo back in 1943. Knautschke has the entire Freibad Wernersee to himself but, when I was there, I didn’t see he enjoying much of it. Maybe it was cold; maybe it was the fact that the pool was frozen. Maybe he was just waiting for a time where he would have company, but this will, probably, never happen.

The first time that I went to Steglitz was to visit a Primark since they only had one shop in Berlin and the shop was in this part of the city that I had never been before. That visit was 2012, and it was then that my obsession with the Bierpinsel started. That day was the first time that I had seen anything as weird looking as that building, and it was, also, my first contact with Architectural Brutalism. The Central Animal Laboratory of the Freie Universität is one of the best examples of Brutalist architecture in Berlin, and we visited the building at the end of December 2016 to see this strange looking building in the middle of Lichterfelde. It took us a while to find it, but once you see it, there is no way of ignoring it based on its monstrous appearance and the contrast with the area surrounding it.

Inside the 25hours Hotel Berlin, you will find almost 150 rooms in a modernist building from the 1950s. The building had seen better days in the past, and it was neglected for quite a while before Bikini-Haus came into existence with its shops, restaurants, and lifestyle. Bringing some new life into a part of Berlin that needed a breath of fresh air.

Like I said before, We Will Forget Soon is a fantastic book that documents a part of German history that most people don’t like to talk about but that needs to be told. When David Bowie died, in early 2016, we were surprised to read a tweet from the German Foreign Office mentioning how he helped bring down the Berlin Wall. I have been to West Berlin a few hundred times but, for me, that part of the city is still a mystery. What if I told you that the best place to see Berlin from above is not the on the huge TV Tower in the middle of Alexanderplatz? It might sound weird at first but it makes a lot of sense after you think about it. Do you want to take pictures of Berlin with its main tourist spot in there right? So, you need to go somewhere where the TV Tower can be seen. Somewhere as tall as the tower but way less crowded. That place exists and it is the Park Inn Hotel Alexanderplatz Viewing Platform and I going to tell you everything about it now.
